Dear Reader,

Over the past months, we made important strides in advancing sustainable graphite technologies, from launching the large-scale production of battery-grade graphite to unveiling a new low-fluoride purification method and its pilot line design.

We have also continued strengthening our collaborations and actively engaging with the broader scientific and industrial communities to promote the project’s goals. Additionally, we call on industry input to advance next-generation battery anode technology.

Project progress

On 14-15 May, the GR4FITE3 project held its fourth General Assembly in London, in the MINVIRO facilities, and online. The consortium dived into key updates, such as developments of graphite purification processes, graphite shaping, sizing and coating. During the second day, RINA led an exploitation workshop in order to complete the Characterization Tables for the project’s identified Key Exploitable Results (KERs).

KNUTD develops low-fluoride purification method and pilot line design for natural graphite

The preliminary pilot line design was also proposed to support industrial scale-up and align with EU sustainability goals.

Milestone in battery-grade graphite scale-up

Led by CIDETEC and in collaboration with ZVG, KNUTD, and IG, the team has made significant progress in spheronization, purification, and surface treatment.

Industry engagement

GR4FITE3 seeks industry input to advance next-generation battery anode technology

We are looking for organizations involved in battery and energy storage system manufacturing; production of battery-integrated products; and use of batteries for energy efficiency and storage.

“Powering Europe’s Net-Zero Future” featured our insights on regulations, graphite sustainability, and purification technologies. The panel explored supply chain resilience, market gaps, and policy for sustainable innovation.

BRGM on the production of natural and synthetic battery-grade graphite

Our partner BRGM participated in SETAC 2025 (May 11–15), presenting a poster titled “Understanding the Production of Natural and Synthetic Battery-Grade Graphite: An EU Perspective on Supply Risk and Environmental Impact”.
